Tuscany

A definite part of Tuscany's charm is the ability to relax by a swimming pool, soaking up the sun and the surrounding vistas. Whilst the villas at Casole provide a stunning ambiance for this, there is also a wealth of exploration opportunities within a short drive.

Monteriggioni and Colle Val d'Elsa are the closest towns to Castello di Casole. Monteriggioni is one of the most classical Italian walled villages. The ancient walls, nearly intact, cover a length of 570 metres and are alternated by 14 towers and two gates. Within the walls, a main street crosses the piazza lined with a few houses, a pretty Romanesque church, enoteca's, craft shops, restaurants and gardens.

Within a 25 minute drive of the estate is San Gimignano, the famous "town of towers", who's dramatic skyline dominates the Val d'Elsa. There are few places that evoke the atmosphere of mediaeval Tuscany so powerfully.

San Gimignano was founded by the Etruscans and grew rich from agriculture as well as being an important resting place on the pilgrim way to Rome until the population was devastated by the plague in the fourteenth century, and its economy collapsed. Consequently only fifteen of the original seventy-two towers survived.

The towers represented wealth and influence more than defence and security, the higher the tower the richer your family. It is a popular tourist destination, rich in works of art, fine shops and great restaurants.

For a larger scale extravaganza, guests can utilise Catello di Casole's location to enjoy the world famous Palio in Siena (25minutes drive away). Taking place on the 2nd July and 16th August each year, the 10 Contradas of Siena parade through the cobbled streets in medieval regalia before a bareback horse race takes place in the town square.

Although only lasting three laps, thousands of tourists and locals gather in the square hours before the race starts, with the locals displaying incredible amounts of passion for a race that hasn't changed in its tradition since the 14th century.

Pure Destinations is happy to organise wine tasting tours to the local vineyards or advise on the best ones to visit. Sometimes it is the less commercial vineyards that provide the more personal and enjoyable atmosphere, but the cavernous cellars of the more major producers are something to behold.
