Completed in 2002 and designed by Greg Norman, Doonbeg has been quickly established as one of Europe's best courses and one of the top links courses in the world. Famous for his 'least disturbance philosophy' Norman has created a course built almost entirely from the natural contours of the land and without a single blade of foreign grass.
With many of the greens and fairways simply mowed from their existing surroundings, Doonbeg Golf Club now resides amid the steeply matted dunes that have been earmarked for golf development for well over 100 years. Now, due to the proximity to Shannon and Dublin Airports, this incredible stretch of coastline is open to the worldwide golfing community.
Variations in wind speed and direction ensure Doonbeg plays differently every time. The Par-72 course features a single loop of nine holes out and nine back, playing 6,885 yards from the back tees with five par 3s and five par 5s.
The signature hole is undoubtedly the 14th, a par 3 and one of the most sensational short holes in Ireland. Measuring a mere 111 yards but with the Atlantic stretching out beyond the green, the wind will dictate club selection and players can expect to take anything from a sand wedge to a 3 iron.
Despite the fierce reputation of links golf, the fairways of the 4th, 8th, 10th, 1th, 15th and 17th holes are very forgiving. If balls do stray into the rough however, do not spend too much time looking for them! The greens are exaggerated but this is totally in character with the personality of the course and the challenge with which Greg Norman has created.
